Lens Whacking: What It Means & How to Do It

Search the Internet for the term "lens whacking" and you will find a lot of tutorials on this cinematic technique. I find lens whacking very interesting and look forward to using it on future projects. Below you will find a tutorial from Film Riot, explaining what lens whacking is and how to use it. In short, lens whacking is a method by which you don't actually attach a lens to your camera. By keeping the lens an inch or so away from the camera body, you allow light to leak in to the sensor, creating some very interesting effects. Lens whacking also gives your footage a tilt shift focus effect and an overall vintage, dream-like look. Watch the tutorial below to see a demonstration.

Ever wonder how Lens Whacking is done? Today Ryan breaks down how you can easily pull off this technique.
