How to Preserve Proper Frame Rates for Your iPhone Footage

The high frame rate feature on the iPhone produces some beautiful, silky smooth slow-motion shots; up to 240 frames per second. This makes the camera a viable option for professional shooters. I've been playing around with these higher frame rates and look forward to using the iPhone 6 for upcoming projects. 

If you are planning to shoot either 120fps or 240fps, it's important to know how to get the footage off of your iPhone and into your video editor. 

Some people I've talked to have had trouble playing back 120fps and 240fps footage from the iPhone 6 in their editing software. After importing the clips, the footage plays back at normal speed and adding a timewarp effect (for Avid users) results in unwanted frame blending. If you too are experiencing this issue, there's a simple solution to restore smooth slow-motion playback.

• Import your footage into After Effects (Cmd + i, or simply double click within the project panel).

• Drop the footage into a new composition (Composition>New Composition).

• Highlight the clip.

• Select File>Interpret Footage.

• When the dialog box appears, type in the frame rate of your original iPhone clip.

After Effects will do the rest and your clip will now play back at the desired frame rate. From there, simply render your composition at the desired settings suitable for your NLE.

Some of you may not be experiencing this issue. I've exported a few clips from my phone and have had no playback issues thus far.
