Color Shifting in PremierePro? Here's the Fix

A few weeks ago I came across this question on Reddit:

Color shifts between proxy and original media when toggling proxy. Need help!

Hello, when i toggle between proxy media the color shifts between proxy and original media. I haven't been able to find any help online hoping someone here can help out.

The author included the following still frames:

Proxy on

Proxy off

I’ve also come across this issue, although I’ve heard from others that the latest version of Premiere has an automatic fix to prevent this from happening. However, if you’re still seeing this while working with proxy media, here’s the solution:

The problem is due to a color space mismatch problem. The color space of the proxy is different than the color space of your raw media. If this is happening to you, check the color space settings of your sequence. It’s probably set to Rec2100.

What should you do?

If you’re working with proxies and this problem occurs, you really don’t need to do anything. Just use the proxies, despite the color mismatch, and finish your edit. When it comes time to color correct, simply toggle proxies off and make your corrections. When you export the master, PremierePro will link back to the high-res footage and the final video will look as it should.
