Season 1 Episode 11: The ‘Crusher of Dreams’
When I invited Karen on the show, I knew we’d have a lot to talk about. We go way back—college theater, Bond movie spoofs, and the kind of creative chaos that only a black box stage can deliver. But what I didn’t expect was how much her journey from props coordinator to Head of Production would resonate with so many of us in the creative field. Karen’s story is one of persistence, humility, and learning to lead with both grace and grit.
“I credit Janice for giving me my grace. I credit Mike for giving me my toughness,” she said.
That balance—between kindness and command—is something she’s carried into every shoot, whether she’s wrangling a $900,000 production or navigating last-minute client requests when the rug just gets completely pulled out from underneath you.
We talked about the myth of glamour in production. “People think it’s all beach views and catered lunches,” Karen laughed. “But it’s 100-degree heat, standing on your feet all day, and making sure everyone’s happy.” Her honesty is what makes her such a compelling voice in the advertising industry and that’s why I wanted to have her on the show.
