Season 1 Episode 4: I Heard the Nightmare Stories Ahead of Time

In this month’s podcast, I talk with Monica Summerfield who has been my 1st AD since 2017 (and a fantastic collaborator). She’s worked in the Memphis independent film scene for 20 years. Monica’s journey began unexpectedly when she was studying interior design at the University of Memphis and she was asked if she would like to read for a part in The Rainmaker. This sparked her interest in the film industry. Despite the decline of major motion picture productions in Memphis, Monica found her niche in the independent film scene.

Monica discusses the importance of collaboration and the sense of family among film crews, while emphasizing the need for teamwork and problem-solving on set. She shares a particularly challenging experience working as the 1st AD on a feature film with no script or shot list.

Monica also talks about her role as a radio show host at Radio Memphis, where she helps promote local artists and filmmakers. She encourages aspiring filmmakers to persevere and push through challenges, sharing her own experiences of not being taken seriously initially due to her lack of formal film education. Monica’s dedication to her craft and her community is evident throughout the conversation.
