Director’s Statement
I love being a parent, but it’s such a roller coaster of emotions. Few things in life can fill you with such wonder, dread, worry, terror, love, and pride like being a parent can. So, I definitely feel a strong connection to any story pertaining to the job of parenting.
I remember that first night after my wife and I brought our first child home from the hospital. Neither of us got much sleep. As a matter of fact, we didn’t sleep much at all over the next four months. It’s all a hazy blur, to be honest, but I do remember that strong sense of responsibility I had and the feeling that I would do absolutely anything to provide for and protect that little human. Now, fourteen years later, my wife and I can laugh about all the experiences we’ve had as parents of a newborn, even the challenging ones.
The topic of parenting is so universal. Even if you’ve never been a parent, you’ve no doubt heard the stories and understand just what lengths parents will go to in order to provide the very best for their children. By making The Milky Way I’m reliving my own past as a new parent while paying tribute to parents everywhere who sacrifice so much for the care and well-being of something so small and vulnerable.
I want audiences to smile, to laugh, and to sympathize with characters who are authentic and relatable. Parenting three children has meant so much to me over the years and this project serves as the intersection between two of the most important things in my life - my children and my love of filmmaking. And I think it’s important to make comedies right now. Audiences need the escape and I want to be the one to make them laugh.
